About Us

A bit about us

Our story

Camp Hayden was inspired by 3-year-old Hayden Chapa. Hayden was a child with special needs from Idaho Falls, Idaho with microlissencephaly. Knowing that his time on earth would be limited, Hayden’s parents, Kami & Jason Chapa, were determined to give him every wonder-filled childhood experience possible. And so began the story of Camp Hayden.

The loss of our son led us down a path of healing, helping, giving and living.

Kami & Jason Chapa, founders

We understand first-hand that adventure comes in all shapes and sizes. From ziplining to climbing through fire trucks, horses to paddleboarding, or simply blowing your first bubble — we celebrate every triumph with wild enthusiasm. At Camp Hayden it’s all about what we can do.

We provide shared, safe adventures and active support for families to feel connected and an integral part of the memories they create at Camp Hayden. While Camp Hayden focuses on serving families today, our long-term plan is to broaden our reach to include veterans, at-risk teens, and seniors.

The father of Hayden Max Chapa (the inspiration for Camp Hayden), Jason is the visionary, construction manager and muscle for Camp Hayden. When Hayden was born with micro-lissencephaly, Jason used his ingenuity and passion for creating to make toys intended for kids without special needs accessible and usable for Hayden. Whether it was making kid’s electric cars remote control (so he could drive Hayden around in it) or rigging up support on sleds for Hayden, Jason was always on a mission to give Hayden a fulfilling life with lots of amazing experiences. After losing Hayden in 2016, Jason was compelled to take this tragedy and make it into something inspiring, which he has done with the creation of Camp Hayden in 2017 and the creation of his road construction company Roundabout Construction in 2019.

Jason grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho and worked with his father Max Chapa to grow their moving company into a viable business after high school. After starting his family with Kami Chapa in 2013, Jason worked hard to provide for his family, support his friends and his local community by giving his time and resources to those in need. Jason and Kami had the original vision for Camp Hayden, and Jason took the initiative to reach out to the Idaho Falls YMCA to pitch the idea of letting Camp Hayden rebuild the Big Elk Creek Camp and retrofit it to make it handicap accessible. After spending months living at the Big Elk Creek Camp, donating thousands of hours and dollars, and finding passionate volunteers, donors and families to attend the camp, Jason’s vision for Camp Hayden became a reality in July of 2017. As a father to Haisley Chapa (born 2019), founder of Camp Hayden and owner of Roundabout Construction, Jason manages to juggle all of his responsibilities with grace and is always looking ahead to the future.

The mother of Hayden Max Chapa (the inspiration for Camp Hayden), Kami Chapa has experienced the love and loss of a child with special needs. At birth, Hayden was diagnosed with a rare disorder called micro-lissencephaly, which generally means a shortened lifespan with limited development potential. Despite the challenges inherent with this rare disorder, Kami and her husband Jason Chapa made every effort to support Hayden and give him all the opportunities that a child without special needs would have. Whether it was camping, floating or just playing with him and enjoying his infectious little laugh, Kami made sure Hayden was surrounded with love and support for the entirety of his short life. After three unforgettable years spent with family and friends, Hayden passed away on October 27, 2016.

Kami grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she worked in the service industry and has been heavily involved in support groups for families with special needs children like hers. After the passing of Hayden, Kami and Jason felt inspired to take their tragedy and transform it into something positive in memory of their little boy. Kami traveled to Mexico to give out Christmas gifts to local children, volunteered with the Idaho Falls Civitans to help raise money for community fundraisers, and personally reached out to other parents in the special needs community who suffered struggles or losses. In 2017 Kami and Jason founded Camp Hayden to provide adventures and opportunities for other families in their communities and rebuilt the YMCA Big Elk Creek Camp, where they hosted their first two camps. In 2019 the Chapas welcomed their daughter Haisley to their family, and they work hard to balance raising a beautiful little girl, a new business and guiding the Camp Hayden board and activities.
